Moving house is still meant to be one of the three most stressful things that happens to people. A little bit of planning can help remove some of this stress and allow for a smoother move.

Below are some of the things you could do to make life a little easier on the day.

Dismantling : There is little doubt that in the flat pack world many of us now live in things can be done to make the removal of furniture a lot easier. Start with any large tables with removable legs. Consider if you think any wardrobes will be able to be removed in one piece or not. Generally if they are tall or have more than two doors they nearly always need to be taken apart to remove them from a home.

Freezers : Start to use up the contents prior to the move and either use it as a good time to clean and defrost your freezer at the point of moving or put it on the highest freeze setting a few days prior to the move. Generally it will be the last thing on and the first thing to be taken off. Removers generally cannot remove freezers when they are filled.

Important Items : Allocate one small box and put into this all the small important items that can easily be misplaced when moving house. These may include the TV remotes, keys to cabinets, screws from anything you have taken apart.

Packing : If you are packing up your home content yourself you can never start this process too early. Boxes purchased from your remover will be much stronger generally than anything you may buy on the internet. Use your move as a an opportunity to clear out and declutter, rather than pack everything up and sort it when you move....as this rarely happens !!

Moving Date : Try and push for a minimum of two weeks in-between exchange and completion as this will give you a fighting chance of finding a professional removal company, but note that at busy periods such as the summer or before Christmas this may not be sufficient notice.
