Importing Household Effects into South Africa

You must have arrived in South Africa prior to your shipment, and only one duty free shipment per person.  If you have more than one shipment you will need to gain permission from the South African Revenue Service.  All clients must have a current visa/ work permit which is valid for a minimum of one year.  Please note although duty free entry can be gained for South Africa providing you meet the criteria, all shipments will be subject to a levy called the National Port Authority Wharfage.  An indication of these charges can be provided by Appleyards upon request. This charge is payable upon arrival in South Africa.

Restricted and Prohibited Items for South Africa

Perfume and Tobacco are restricted but may be imported but will be subject to full duty.

Should you wish to take alcohol please note you will need an import permit for this prior to shipment.

Firearms may be imported duty free, but is under strict control.  Further information on the shipment of Firearms can be obtained from the South African Police.   You will need an import permit prior to shipment; this can be obtained from Import and Export Control in Pretoria

Drugs of any kind, plants and food stuffs are prohibited and must not be shipped. Plants, seeds flowers, honey and any pornographic material must not be included in your shipment

Transit Times for South Africa

Groupage shipment to South Africa can take between 8 to 12 week from door to door.

Full container shipments can take 21 to 36 days port to port subject to shipping lines.

Customs Clearance in South Africa

Custom clearance is strict in South Africa with nearly every container being inspected. Customs charge an hourly rate for this service and this is payable at destination.  All custom forms will be passed to you by our overseas agent on arrival into South Africa and must be completed at destination prior to the arrival of your goods.

Destination Services in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg

Once your goods have gone through custom clearance charges they will be delivered to your residence at a mutually convenient date.

If we have packed and wrapped your goods at origin we would recommend we do the reverse at residence.  It you choose to unpack your own effects this will impact on your Insurance cover
