Despite their age it is still common to find fully functional grandfather clocks in homes still today and when it comes to how to move them - that requires care.

How To Move A Grandfather Clock

How to Move a Grandfater Clock Packing A Grandfather Clock

Whilst more modern versions do exist, it is the antique grandfather clocks that seem to hold an attraction to many.

What You Need To Know When Moving A Grandfather Clock

It is not possible to move a grandfather clock in one piece as this will lead to damage. There are several steps that need to be followed to ensure that one can be removed safely. Before you start it is better to run the clock down.

  1. Remove the weights - Some clocks have 2 weights, some have 3. Take each one off in turn and mark them as left, centre or right as appropriate so that they can go back in the same way. You can attach some tape and use a marker pen to do this.
  2. Remove the pendulum - Dont touch the feather at the top as this is the most delicate part of the clock
  3. Take off the hood off. This would normally slide forward. As soon as it is off pack  it into a box on its own taking care to protect the glass face.
  4. Remove the clock face. Typically this is just secured by some screw that are vertical to the face. Once these are removed the face will lift off along with the chains for the weights which can all be left intact.

Before you take off the pendulum have a brush handle or board to that it can be secured to it straight away. Also if you have any sandwich ties then use these to secure the changes to prevent them from getting snagged.
