What You Need To Know When Moving Sofas
Sofas these days come in all sorts of shapes and sizes so the guidance we can give can only be very general but a lot of the principles apply to most designs and styles. Wherever possible it makes sense to protect or bag the sofa before you remove it. There are three types of sofa bags that are commonly used.
- Plastic sofa bags : These are cheap and ideal for covering sofas during decorating or storing sofas
- Paper sofa bags : These are stronger than the plastic ones and perfect when used to remove a sofa in and out of a property or to ship it overseas.
- Padded sofa bags : These are used by professional removal companies and whilst expensive, they really do the job in ensuring that your suite cannot be damaged in transit or in removing it in\out of a property.
Moving Standard Sofas : Before moving a sofa it is best to check to see what can be removed from it before you do. Protecting the sofa as described above will ensure that if it gets caught on a doorframe it will tear the bag as opposed to damaging your sofa. Tight accesses can require skill to get large sofas in or out.
Moving Corner Suites : There are now many different designs in peoples homes. Some with extending long beds that have electric motors in them, others have multiple sections. In all instances each section is designed to be separated, usually with strong bolts underneath the sofa, and it makes sense to do this prior to removal. Ensure you keep all bolts in a bag so that they do not get lost.
Moving Sofa Beds : Because sofa beds have a metal frame to support the bed as it is extended these can be much heavier than a normal sofa. In addition if the sofa needs to be up ended at any point there is a tendency for the bed part to try and spring open. If the sofa is strapped down before it is removed it will prevent this from happening.
